This map was created to show the significant number of breweries that were in Milwaukee and eventually lead to the moniker "Brew City". Explore Milwaukee through both space and time to see popular brewing locations and eras throughout the city's history. The timeline feature on the map below begins playing automatically. This is a feature that can be paused and/or replayed at any time.
Guide to using the interactive map
- To view more information about a brewery, click on a pin.
- To move the map click a spot on the map and drag it.
- Zooming is done with the + and - buttons in the top left corner or by simply using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
In the bottom right-hand corner there is a legend that lists the description of the different colored pins used on the map. These colors indicate whether the brewery listed is still functioning, if the location indicated has moved elsewhere or if the brewery has closed.
If you'd like to share this map with others, there is a small icon with a grey "paper airplane" in the top right corner. Clicking this icon will allow you to share the map with others.
Displaying different information
In the top right corner there is a search box. This allows you to input an address or zip code to see what breweries exist or once existed in this location.
The timeline at the bottom of the map will begin playing automatically, but can be paused. You can drag the timeline slider from left to right to display the different breweries that were around in that specific year. To calculate the year, add the number on the timeline to 1840.
Next to the search box is the "visible layers" option. This allows you to change what is displayed on the map. "Brew City MKE" shows all breweries, color-coded by founding date and "Operating Years" shows when breweries were open and operating in Milwaukee.
